King Cake: origin, tradition and ideas for celebrating Epiphany in style

04 January 2026

Every year, at the beginning of January, a delicious and friendly tradition makes its grand return: the galette des rois (King's cake). But do you truly know the origin of this celebration, its meaning, and the different ways it is celebrated today? At LSDLBoutique, we love traditions… especially when they symbolize pleasure, sharing, and special moments for two.

01

What is the origin of the *galette des rois*?

The galette des rois is traditionally eaten on January 6th, Epiphany. This Christian holiday commemorates the visit of the Three Wise Men to the infant Jesus. Long before this, the Romans already celebrated Saturnalia, during which a king was chosen by lot thanks to a fève (bean or trinket) hidden in a cake. The tradition of the fève is therefore much older than one might imagine.

January symbolizes renewal, the beginning of a new cycle. The galette embodies sharing, luck, conviviality, and a touch of assumed indulgence. Today, it can be enjoyed with family, friends... or tête-à-tête.

Regarding recipes, two major traditions compete: the frangipane galette, the most popular in France, and the brioche des rois, more common in the south, flavored with orange blossom. Whatever the version, the essential thing remains the shared moment... and the person with whom you experience it.

02

What if the galette became a more intimate moment?

At LSDLBoutique, we believe that traditions can also be reinvented. Why not turn the galette des rois into an excuse for an intimate and sensual moment?

Here are some ideas to spice up the evening: a galette enjoyed by two, far from the noise, a fève drawing that leads to a seductive dare, or an evening that begins with a crown and continues with role-playing games. Epiphany definitely has more than one trick up its sleeve.

LSDLBoutique: Where tradition meets seduction

Epiphany is also an opportunity to treat yourself or your partner. Elegant, refined or daring lingerie can perfectly accompany this moment: to feel desirable, to surprise, to extend the evening after dessert.

Being a queen or king for a night is also a question of attitude… and what you wear.

The galette des rois is more than just a gourmet tradition. It's a suspended moment, conducive to togetherness, play, and pleasure. At LSDLBoutique, we encourage you to celebrate every occasion as an opportunity to reconnect with your sensuality. And you, how will you celebrate Epiphany this year?
